CREATION OF ECONOMIC CRIME UNIT

A new Economic Crime Unit has been established within the Law Officer's Chambers, with Crown Advocate Will Giles being appointed to the post of the Head of the Economic Crime Unit before Christmas.

The work of the new unit, which sits within the Criminal Law Directorate, comprises economic crime prosecutions, Mutual Legal Assistance, asset recovery (including criminal confiscation and civil forfeiture proceedings), and related policy and legislative work. Crown Advocate Jon McLellan, Director of Legal Services, said "Grouping these existing areas of work into one unit and boosting the resource available to them will build resilience and increase capacity, and demonstrates how seriously these Chambers takes its role in combating money laundering, terrorist financing and all types of economic and financial crime."
